November Event: The College Admissions Process
Jeff Wong, Assistant Director of Admissions at Brandeis University, will give parents and students an inside look at the college admissions process! This session answers the burning questions that every student has:
- What do colleges look for in an application?
- What happens when my application gets to the admissions office?
- Could I be missing something from my application?
"Summit is the complete package. The company not only
prepares the student for success, but also works to educate the parents
along the way. My wife and I attended several Summit-sponsored
seminars, and we found them to be very professional and very
informative. The 1-on-1 tutoring program was a perfect match for our
daughter." -Chris M., Summit Parent
Get to Know Summit:
Lily Scheyhing
Which subjects do you teach? I tutor for the SAT, Math Level 1 & 2 Subject Tests, ACT, SSAT, and Calculus.
What kind of tutor are you? I have a casual tutoring style. I try to be approachable and interact with my students in a way that they can identify with me. Adolescence is a period of transformation, and I think teenagers appreciate communicating with an adult who doesn’t feel like a parent. I encourage my students to work harder when they can and to be gentle with themselves when they’re overwhelmed. I hope my enthusiasm for improvement transfers to the students. “Practice makes better.”
What was your favorite subject in school? I have always enjoyed math because its process is methodical. Math is everywhere we look and it holds together the disparate pieces of this world.
Where did you go to college? I attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon.
What was your major? I majored in Linguistics. It is the perfect marriage of form and social function. Initially, I studied the more formal aspects and later found myself drawn towards the sociolinguistic and anthropological linguistic disciplines. My thesis provided me the opportunity to study the intersection of the two.
What do you love most about tutoring for Summit? When I call or email the office, there is always support on the other end. I am proud to be a member of such a cooperative network.
What have you learned from your students? I’ve received a variety of distinct approaches to problem-solving and test-taking. I’ve learned what causes students concern and how to alleviate this concern for different individuals. Mostly, I’ve learned that high schoolers are very busy.
What is your greatest Summit tutoring success story? A particular student was skeptical about tutoring; he is very bright and was determined to teach himself the material. After working together on a weekly basis, not only did we increase his Math 2 score from a 680 to an 800, but also we continue to meet for academic tutoring sessions before each calculus test.
Lily has helped countless students maximize their scoring potential, but she is only one of our expert tutors and teachers. Call us today at 1-800-MYTUTOR (800-698-8867) to speak with a Program Director and learn more about One-on-One, In-Home Tutoring and Classroom Programs in your area.
